About

Michael joined Burges Salmon on qualification and is now a senior associate in our Family Law and Divorce team. He specialises in advising high net worth and ultra-high net worth individuals on divorce, and prior to marriage.

He has experience in all areas of family law, including divorce, marital agreements (pre and post-nuptial) and financial settlements, including those with significant and/or complex assets, corporate issues and international elements, as well as acting for trustees and third-party intervenors. He also has experience in child arrangement cases.

Michael also has a particular interest in cases with an international element, and has experience in a variety of cases involving jurisdiction disputes, assets in multiple jurisdictions, applications following overseas divorces, and cross border marital agreements.

He is listed in Legal 500 as a Key Lawyer, in both London and Bristol, and is an active member of YRes and Resolution.

Experience

  • HNW individuals: Acting for high net worth individuals, based both in the UK and overseas, with complex business assets and trust structures, including cases where these assets have been acquired prior to marriage.
  • International isssues: Acting in contested forum proceedings in the High Court, and litigating in relation to the appropriate jurisdiction for divorce and financial remedy proceedings.
  • International issues: Advising and acting for individuals in relation to applications to the English court following an overseas divorce.
  • Pre & post marital agreements: Advising on pre and post-marital agreements (UK-based and cross-border), including those to protect significant pre-acquired business assets and inherited family assets worth £50 million +, in some cases with several potentially relevant jurisdictions.
  • Trustees and third-party intervenors: Acting on behalf of trustees and third-party intervenors, where applications have been made to join them into active financial remedy proceedings.
  • Unmarried individuals: Acting on behalf of unmarried individuals in relation to substantial claims for financial provision for the benefit of children, following relationship breakdown.
