Overview

Nia is a Director in the firm’s Construction and Engineering team and provides non-contentious construction law advice to public and private sector construction clients including central government, local authorities, registered providers, developers, property funds, contractors and consultants on a wide-range of complex projects, in particular in the education, housing and care sectors.

Nia spent three years working on secondment as a Commercial Manager in central government, which gave her invaluable insight into the workings and drivers of the public sector client.

Nia has extensive experience in negotiating, drafting and managing standard form and bespoke building and engineering contracts, development agreements, agreements for lease, forward funding agreements and associated construction documents. Nia has particular experience in partnering/alliancing/collaborative working.

Experience

Advised the Department for Education on a large number of Free School and Priority Schools Building Programme projects using DfE’s bespoke building contracts, JCT Contracts, NEC3 contracts and bespoke development agreements, all of which required complex arrangements and successful supply chain and stakeholder engagement due to the need to ensure continuity in education for pupils.

Advised a number of local authorities on the design and build contracts and related construction contracts for an extensive range of schools projects.

Advised a consortium comprising a contractor, housing association and equity provider on a £65 million large student accommodation project.

Advised a local authority on the procurement and term partnering contract in relation to the design, programming and construction works for plant replacement together with other reactive maintenance, planned cyclical works and planned improvement works to be carried out at a major public court building.

Advised a local authority on the procurement and project partnering contract for flood and water quality management works at a major green space.

Advised the SPV in relation to a large social housing PFI in England.

Advised a major investor on the construction contracts for a number of healthcare projects.

Advised a leading infrastructure services and engineering company on the construction and engineering contracts relating to a residual waste treatment project.

Advised a number of institutional investors on the construction aspects of acquisitions and sale of retail, office and industrial properties including preparation of pro-forma construction documents for use across their portfolios.
