At Burges Salmon, we are committed to delivering exceptional legal services through collaboration, innovation, and a deep understanding of our clients' needs. We are now looking for a Risk Associate to join our Risk and Best Practice team.

This is a unique opportunity to step into a broad and exciting role, supporting the firm's legal and regulatory compliance with a particular focus on contract management. You will work closely with colleagues across the business, advising on a wide range of risk and regulatory matters that are central to the firm's success. The role offers variety, challenge, and the chance to make a real impact within a collaborative and progressive team.

What you'll be doing

As a Risk and Regulatory Associate, you will:

  • Review and advise on client engagement terms, codes of conduct, and compliance with client and firm policies.
  • Support client pitches and marketing initiatives from a risk and compliance perspective.
  • Lead on updates to the firm's engagement letters and terms of business.
  •  Advise on secondments, international assignments, and subcontracting arrangements.
  • Maintain and develop the firm's compliance policies and procedures.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and initiate necessary changes.
  • Deliver training and raise awareness of risk and compliance issues across the firm.
  • Provide legal advice and research on regulatory matters, including SRA Standards and Regulations.
  •   Support internal audits and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  •  Represent the Risk and Best Practice team on internal projects and committees.
  • Mentor and develop junior team members.

We're looking for someone who brings:

  •  A current practising certificate or a strong background in law firm risk management.
  •  Experience in commercial contract review and negotiation.
  • Knowledge of the SRA Handbook and key legal and regulatory obligations (e.g. AML regulations).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive, flexible, and resilient approach to managing competing priorities.
  • A collaborative mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement.

We are committed to an inclusive and supportive working environment. We would be open to applications from individuals returning to the legal profession following a career break, such as parental leave, as well as those considering transitioning from private practice or other sectors into legal risk and compliance.

We embrace a hybrid working model that offers flexibility and supports a healthy work-life balance. Our hybrid working approach allows you to work from home, subject to business needs, with most people spending 40% to 60% of their time in the office.
