About

Andy is a Senior Associate in the Pensions and Lifetime Savings team. He joined Burges Salmon as a trainee in 2009 after graduating from Durham University with a first class degree in law.

He has substantial experience in all areas of pensions law, advising both pension scheme trustees and employers across a broad range of pensions issues. Andy advises in relation to both defined benefit and defined contribution arrangements. His experience includes projects such as benefit changes, liability management, closures, bulk transfers, mergers, corporate restructurings, historic scheme documentation issues, buy-ins/outs, use of surplus and winding-up. He advises on all aspects of the day to day running of pension schemes, including in relation to scheme governance, pensions dashboards, cyber security, drafting scheme documentation, member queries and providing trustee training.

Andy is dual qualified in England & Wales and Northern Ireland, is a full member of the Association of Pension Lawyers (APL) and is also a member of the APL South West committee.

Experience

  • AT&T Pension Scheme: Advising on all DB and DC matters including buy-in, guarantee arrangements, GMP equalisation, use of surplus, cyber and data protection issues and scheme governance.
  • University of Oxford Staff Pension Scheme: Advising on all defined benefit and defined contribution matters including the establishment and operation of its DC section including Master Trust authorisation and ongoing compliance.
  • Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company: Advising on its executive pensions arrangements and in relation to the Local Government Pension Scheme (Northern Ireland).
  • Gallaher Limited: Acting on de-risking projects in respect of two defined benefit schemes (aggregate pension liabilities of £1.7 billion).
  • Western Power Distribution: Advising on all aspects of its pension arrangements including two groups in the Electricity Supply Pension Scheme.
