About

Ian is a partner in our market leading Nuclear Team. He is an experienced nuclear lawyer with invaluable industry experience from the consenting of nuclear projects.

He is an expert in the field of nuclear regulation and nuclear law, advising clients on the establishment of nuclear programmes in emerging nuclear states, the drafting of nuclear laws and the development, construction, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. He acts for investors, lenders, governments, insurers, regulators, vendors, developers, operators, and contractors on all aspects of these projects in the UK and around the world. He has advised on all major nuclear new build projects in the UK since 2008 as well as most existing, operational nuclear sites and currently works with clients in central and western Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Middle East.

Ian is recognised by Legal 500 for his significant knowledge of international and UK nuclear law and jointly edits the Burges Salmon Guide to Nuclear Law

  • Nuclear Industry Association: Invited to participate in the Nuclear Industry Association’s Taskforce for streamlining nuclear regulation.
  • Advanced Nuclear Technologies: Advising multiple SMR and AMR vendors and developers on the consenting and development of ANT projects in the UK and globally.
  • Nuclear Restoration Services: Advising on the nuclear and environmental aspects of decommissioning the UK’s legacy nuclear sites.
  • Nuclear Risk Insurers: Advising on the requirements of international nuclear law and the insurance of nuclear risks.
  • Urenco: Advising in relation to nuclear regulatory matters, nuclear liability and crisis management.
  • Foreign SMR developer: Advising a foreign SMR developer regarding the development of nuclear projects in central Europe and the UK.
