About

Ian is an experienced commercial litigator and transport specialist with extensive experience in the energy and utilities sectors. He heads the firm’s Public Sector Disputes team and regularly acts in court, arbitration and resolution of matters brought by and against public bodies.

He has experience in public procurement disputes at early stage and through the courts (including appeal and Supreme Court), providing challenge risk advice as well as conducting litigation with (sometimes) large evidential issues. He regularly handles Judicial Review proceedings.

Ian is a transport law specialist having advised rail industry bodies for over twenty years as well as bus and aviation sector businesses. He has a deep and broad understanding of rail regulation as well as having conducted arbitrations, expert determination and mediations over some of the industry’s largest disputes.

He deals with regulators as decision making bodies and dispute parties including in the transport and energy sectors.

Ian is member of the Procurement Lawyers Association and is a solicitor advocate.

  • Confidential train operator: Providing advice in respect of access-related compensation claim in arbitration.
  • Renewable heat generation companies: Acting in judicial review against Ofgem for failure to register them for RHI subsidy.
  • Software providers: Advising on claims relating to the end of development work.
  • Food producer: Providing advice in relation to compensation for destruction of an onshore wind turbine by fire.
  • Solar farm developer: Advising in a regulatory reference to Ofgem under the Electricity Act relating to connection agreements.
  • Provider of outsourced call handling services: Advising in relation to a public procurement claim in the High Court.
