We have advised SAE, a global developer, owner and operator of sustainable energy projects, on its joint venture with international independent power producer Econergy International Limited (Econergy) to co-develop the AW2 250MW battery storage project at SAE’s Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park (USEP). USEP is one of the leading battery storage sites in the UK, with over 1GW of projects either in construction or development.
The partnership brings together two leaders in the renewable energy space, combining SAE’s experience in developing complex renewable energy generation and storage, as well as its ownership of the highly strategic USEP site, with Econergy’s expertise in battery storage construction, financing, and execution.
The AW2 project, which aims to achieve planning permission within the next 12 months and financial close in 2027, would be the third battery storage project to be delivered at USEP.
Led by partner Danny Lee, associate Scott Paterson and solicitor Jenny Purcell, Burges Salmon’s Corporate and M&A team advised SAE on the transaction.
“It has been a pleasure to act for SAE as it joins forces with Econergy, ensuring the AW2 project is well-positioned to move through the planning process and toward financial close. Our experience advising on all types of corporate ventures in the energy sector means we were well positioned to support SAE on this major battery storage transaction.”
Danny Lee, partner
“This partnership is an ideal fit for both parties and for the project. We have a clear strategy to be an independent power producer, and we are delighted to be partnering with a company that has the same strategy. We look forward to working with Econergy to deliver this exciting project for our businesses, the community and our shareholders. We’re thankful to Burges Salmon for its excellent and diligent advice.”
