Overview

Edward is a director within the Private Client and Wealth Structuring team and specialises in the following areas:

  • UK taxation of non-UK resident trusts and companies
  • UK tax planning for UK resident and non-resident individuals
  • disclosures to HMRC in order to regularise the tax affairs of trustees and individuals (particularly where those liabilities relate to assets held offshore)
  • cross-border estates and succession planning (including the effect of the European Succession Regulation)
  • application of the Common Reporting Standard in the context of trusts, estates and wealth planning structures
  • application of data protection laws (including GDPR) in the context of trusts and estates.

Edward is a co-host of 'Death and Taxes', the private client podcast from Burges Salmon.

He is also a member of, and regularly chairs, STEP's Data Protection Working Group and has also spoken at events on a number of subjects, including the UK's taxation of non-domiciled individuals and the taxation of UK residential property.

Experience
  • Advising a large multinational bank in relation to the approach of its fiduciary services business to tax risk.
  • Advising trustees and individuals on the UK tax implications of recent changes to the taxation of non-domiciled persons and non-UK resident trusts.
  • Advising the trustees of a long-standing family trust structure on the implications of succession planning for the beneficiaries, including consideration of the ongoing tax issues for the family in various jurisdictions.
  • Advising on the termination of a complex multinational structure and the tax implications for the trustees, underlying companies and relevant individuals.
  • Advising the executors of a cross-border estate on the implications of a challenge to the deceased’s will.
  • Advising on the application of the European Succession Regulation to the estate of a US citizen living in the UK with assets in France, the UK and the US.
  • Advising trustees on their obligations under GDPR.
