Overview
Justin is a Senior Associate in the Technology team and advises on a wide range of commercial technology, data protection, intellectual property and cyber security matters.

Justin’s expertise covers complex B2B2C cloud-based technology platforms that increasingly make use of AI technologies across a range of (both regulated and non-regulated) sectors.

Justin has a strong interest in the space, satellite and cyber sector. He was the only UK candidate selected from the European Space Agency’s ECSL course in Space Law and Policy (Class of 2013). He has been the legal adviser for the Satellite Applications Catapult’s South-West Centre of Excellence SpaceTech Incubation Programme, backed by the UK Space Agency, and was also part of the team that helped advise Spaceport Cornwall and Cornwall Council on the regulatory and legal requirements for building, licensing and operating the UK’s first horizontal spaceport.

Prior to his career in law, Justin led and worked for both large and early stage venture backed, technology companies. He has a wealth of international, commercial and entrepreneurial experience across a range of sectors and brings a pragmatic, commercially astute approach to the advice he provides clients.

Justin has an LL.M in data protection from the University of Law, an MA in Chinese from the University of Edinburgh and a decade of experience negotiating in spoken and read Mandarin Chinese. In the 2024 edition of Legal 500 he was recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in IT and Telecoms, and he is also a member of the Society for Computers and Law (SCL).
Experience
  • Advising a market leading software business, whose systems and dataflows underpin the majority of lending decisions made within the UK’s £300+ billion mortgage market, on a full range of commercial agreements, service launches, licensing and regulatory compliance and connected services.
  • Acting for the UK’s largest online protection broker, advising on a wide range of commercial technology arrangements (both regulated and non regulated), including in relation to the launch of a new, industry first, multi-lender digital product offering for a real-time life insurance price comparison service deployed with multiple online distribution partners.
  • Advising a geo-spatial data technology client on the intellectual property and cybercrime risks in relation to various open data use case scenarios.
  • Advising on regulatory and legal issues relating to building, licensing and operating a horizontal spaceport in the UK.
  • Advising a small satellite operator on Earth observation market entry and data protection regulatory compliance.
