Burges Salmon announces key leadership changes

Picture of Roger Bull

We are pleased to announce several key leadership changes across our sectors and departments, effective from 1 May 2025.

Heads of Sector

Chris Simms, a highly experienced transport lawyer, will take over as Head of the firm’s Transport Sector. Chris succeeds Brioney Thomas, who has skilfully guided the Transport Sector group and its clients through an incredibly volatile period of change both during and since Covid. Chris will continue to drive the Transport sector group with close support from Colin Ligman and other partners and directors across the firm.

Partner Lydia Cullimore will assume the role of Rail Head of Sub-sector (HoSS). Lydia specialises in advising clients in the rail industry on rail regulation, passenger rail contracts and operations, rail freight, and rail infrastructure projects, making her well-placed to take on this role.

Kevin Kennedy, a seasoned expert with considerable experience in both the agricultural and private client markets, will take over as Estates and Land Head of sub-sector from Tom Hewitt. Tom has held this role for 11 years during which time he has overseen significant growth and enhanced the profile of the Estates and Land team, establishing it as a key area of expertise within the firm.

Heads of Department

Brioney Thomas will take over as the Head of Department for the Projects department from Ian Salter. Ian has led the Projects department since 2015 and has been the driving force behind its success, building the department to a team of over 90 people. Ian will continue to play an important role in the firm’s Projects department as Head of the Nuclear sub-sector group.

Luke Bowery will take on the role of Head of Department for the Employment department following Adrian Martin’s appointment to the firm’s Strategic Board. Adrian became Employment Head of Department on 1 May 2018 and has overseen significant growth and market success, including various industry award wins recognising the team’s excellence. Alongside his new role on the Strategic Board, Adrian will remain a key partner within the Employment team, continuing to support and advise clients as usual, ensuring continuity of service.

These appointments follow the news that Ross Fairley had been appointed as the firm’s Senior Partner from 1 May.

We are delighted to announce these leadership changes, which reflect the depth of talent and expertise within our firm. Chris, Lydia, Kevin, Brioney, and Luke have all demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to their respective fields. I am confident that they will continue to drive our firm forward, delivering outstanding service to our clients and contributing to our ongoing success. I would also like to extend our thanks to Brioney, Tom, Ian, and Adrian for their dedication and leadership in their previous roles, which have been instrumental in our firm’s growth and success.
