Burges Salmon advises Simec Atlantis Energy on flagship battery storage project at Uskmouth

The firm has advised sustainable energy developer Simec Atlantis Energy Limited (SAE) on a landmark investment transaction to support the construction of a 240MWh battery storage facility at the Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park (USEP) in Wales — with the potential to scale to 480MWh.

The AW1 project, owned and being constructed by AW1 Energy Storage Limited (AWES), is SAE’s flagship battery storage initiative and a key component of its strategy to transform the Uskmouth site into one of the largest battery storage hubs in the UK. The site is expected to play a pivotal role in driving economic, environmental and social regeneration in the Newport area.

Burges Salmon’s Corporate and M&A team led the transaction, with partner Danny Lee supported by senior associates Scott Fyfe and Katie Carter, and solicitor Manahil Qadir.

Burges Salmon delivered a fully integrated, multi-disciplinary legal service across the transaction with the firm’s Banking & Finance team, led by Graham Soar, Alison Logan, Bernard Ehigiamusor and Alex Manser, playing a central role, advising on two separate debt funding transactions that were critical to securing the financial structure of the deal. Other Burges Salmon teams that were integral to the successful completion of the deal included:

  • Legal Project Management – Angelica Montagnini provided ongoing support throughout the transaction lifecycle
  • Real Estate – supporting the sale of land and a leasing transaction, led by Tom Perret and Simon Dempster
  • Construction & EngineeringLloyd James, Katy Wall, Carys Sherwood and Zar Wilson advised on all construction contracts for the project
  • Projects – advising on the 12-year floored revenue optimisation agreement with EDF Energy Customers Limited, led by Ross Fairley, Andrew Parmar-Yee and Lucy Ashmore

“It’s been a privilege to support SAE on a project of such scale and strategic importance. The AW1 transaction showcases the strength of our multi-disciplinary approach and the depth of collaboration across teams. This project will not only deliver long-term value for SAE but also help unlock the full potential of the Uskmouth site as a national energy asset.”

Danny Lee, Partner, Burges Salmon

“We’re thrilled to have put in place a team to deliver our flagship AW1 project. Our project partners are world leaders, and their involvement is key to ensuring its success, both in terms of delivery and long-term operation. We’re also pleased that all our partners are aligned with our wider vision for the Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park, recognising its potential to become one of the largest battery storage sites in the UK and a catalyst for local and national regeneration. We would also like to thank the Burges Salmon team for their excellent advice and support throughout the transaction.”

David Taaffe, Chief Operating Officer, Simec Atlantis Energy Limited

The project includes supply and construction contracts with Canadian Solar SES (UK) Ltd (CSES), one of the world’s leading battery energy storage manufacturers, and a balance of plant contract with Welsh-based contractor Jones Bros. Ruthin. Construction is already underway, with a contracted grid connection date of October 2026 and commercial operations expected to begin in Q1 2027.

SAE has also entered into a framework agreement with CSES to secure battery supply for future projects, including Mey BESS and AW3, further strengthening its position as a leading developer, owner and operator of sustainable energy infrastructure.
